Nature Walk in the Dyea Valley
Please note our regular itinerary of the moderate 2-mile one way hike on the Chilkoot Trail is not available for 2023 season due to trail damages from flooding. We hope to have our regular itinerary available again in 2024.
We appreciate your understanding.
Begin in Skagway as we drive 10 scenic coastal miles to the Dyea valley, where an abandoned Gold Rush town awaits your exploration. The area, used by stampeeders at the start of their journey to the goldfields at Dawson City, is now part of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. It was a thriving boomtown during the years of 1897-1898 but has returned to nature. There is much cultural history here in the valley, and before Gold Rush times was a native Tlingit seasonal fishing camp and staging area for valuable trade trips on the Chilkoot Trail between the coast and the interior .
On the mostly flat hike, retrace the old town’s streets through a green moss-covered northern temperate rainforest. There are few relics of the old settlement, but they give you a peek into the past. You will learn about the native flora and fauna as well and have time for taking photos.
After the walk, we drive toward the rafting put-in and suit up for a relaxing river float on the tranquil Taiya River. As you float down the gentle glacially fed river, your guide will point out natural features and any wildlife (Bald Eagles are common, bears on rare occasion) while you relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the gorgeous river and mountain views. A granola bar is served riverside after the float.
This is a walking tour in the forest on dirt and gravel paths and you will encounter some uneven natural terrain.
Wear sturdy walking shoes with good traction. Hiking poles are available for the hiking portion.
For the Float portion we have lifejackets, rubber boots to wear instead of your shoes, and long rain ponchos. Tour goes rain or shine so please come prepared to hike in the rain with rainjackets and/or pants if needed.
This tour lasts approximately 4 hours with and 35-45 minutes on the raft (depending on river water levels).
Maximum 11 per group. Larger groups will be divided into 2 groups with possible additional guests in the smaller second grouping. Please contact us directly if you have more than 11 in your group.
